NOTES / REFERENCES: Joseph P. Porter (born 1902). Porter exhibited in the 1951 San Francisco Arts Festival. Porter was known to be reclusive and would lock himself in his studio for weeks and emerge with a new body of work, eagerly bought by collectors.
"Joseph Porter , a San Francisco artist, is the creator of those disturbing, haunting and exciting paintings he called his Palette Fantasies. As a young boy Porter was thoroughly trained in the fundamentals of paintings, but prevented from giving full time to his vocation, he ran away from home. For fifteen years he traveled all over the world, doing all kinds of jobs to survive and acquiring a practical education. Finally he settled in San Francisco and began to paint in earnest. For the next twenty years he taught and painted. During all his travels he imagined himself painting everything he saw, without tools, without media, just with his mind: and now, all that stored knowledge must come out in his work. Thus are born his Palette Fantasies, a truly fitting name to represent a lifetime of childish curiosity, youthful longings and mature emotions."
