Rare early Florida etching by well-listed American artist, Charles Frederick William Mielatz (1864-1919).

Etching on cream wove stock. Signed in pencil under the image " Mielatz Imp. "Signed and dated in the plate, lower right. Annotated in pencil, by the artist at the lower edge with the title and edition information. Unframed.

A very fine etching by this master etcher depicting a storm on the Florida lake near the Everglades. Dramatic and realistic in feeling, with an impressionist technique. Etchings by this artist usually depict New York, Midwest and New England scenes and his Southern images are rare. This early view of Florida was printed by Mielatz in a total edition of only 25.

NOTES / REFERENCES: Charles F. Mielatz (American 1864-1919) was born in Bredding, Germany in 1864. He immigrated to the United States as a young boy and studied at the Chicago School of Design. Charles Mielatz was a member of the New York Etching Club and elected an Associate Member of the National Academy in 1906. He succeeded James David Smillie as the etching teacher at the National Academy, a position he held for 15 years. According to Wilson’s Index of American Print Exhibitions, 1882-1940, he was involved in nine group exhibitions including the New York Etching Club, The Brooklyn Society of Etchers, and posthumously at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1929. He died in New York City on June 2, 1919.
