Description
One male figure and one female figure, both with painted details. Probably made by the same carver, possibly to honor twins.
HEIGHT (of male figure) - 7.75" ( 19.5 cm )
PROVENANCE: San Francisco estate collection.
NOTES / REFERENCES: Just as the Yoruba in Nigeria, their eastern neighbors, the Ewe in Togo and Ghana, honor their twins. The Ewe call these figures "venavi" and they are stylistically different from typical Yoruba ibeji carvings. ‘Venavi’ are carved from light-colored wood, generally from the kapok tree and are usually monochrome except for the hair and the feet that are often accented in black and red paint. The classical Ewe style stipulates a very stereotyped pose, rigid, standing emphatically upright, and with both arms and hands always separated from the body, pointing directly downwards.
