West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden ikenga figure shown as a tall warrior who brandishes a sword in one hand and a severed human head in the other. The dark figure stands with a slight but stable lean given the form of the asymmetrical hemisphere base. Almond eyes and a prominent nose form the visage while a pair of massive horns spiral above his head. In Igbo society, the Ikenga is a ritual object that symbolizes masculine strength as well as the ability to achieve great things using one's own efforts. Figures like these are typically to be placed on or next to a personal altar. Size: 5.5" L x 7.25" W x 22.3" H (14 cm x 18.4 cm x 56.6 cm)

Splitting to base that causes a slight lean as shown. Abrasions and some stable fissures, otherwise in great condition. Nice form and size.
