Description
1838 letter handwritten and signed in ink by Alexander Stephens, who would go on to become the Vice President of the Confederate States of America. The letter discusses business matters related to his law practice, including debts owed. Stephens had a long and storied political career, beginning in 1836 as a Georgia state representative and concluding as that state’s governor in the 1880s. He is perhaps best remembered for his 1861 “Cornerstone Speech” which defended slavery; enumerated contrasts between the founding of America and the Confederacy, and laid out the Confederacy's rationale for seceding. The letter remains in very good condition.
