Title: STRANGE TALES No. 110 (1st DOCTOR STRANGE)
Place Published:
Publisher:Marvel
Date Published: July, 1963
Description:
CGC certified: VG/Fine (5.0). Cream to off-white pages. Stories by Lee, Lieber and Hart. Kirby cover. Art by Dick Ayres, Larry Lieber, Matt Fox & Steve Ditko.
Doctor Strange makes a stealthy debut, ceding top billing to the Human Torch and Paste-Pot Pete with zen-like humility. The label on the CGC slab, reading "1st Appearance of Doctor Strange," completes the cover's design by providing the only visual clue as to the mag's greater significance, a nicely meta touch in keeping with Marvel's resident metaphysician.
This was an underappreciated, undervalued mag for years, but that's changed. Strange Tales #110 is currently #21 on Overstreet's "Top 50 Silver Age Comics" list. Next year's MCU sequel, with Doc Strange vs Baron Mordo, may drive prices higher still. If so, anyone lucky enough to own a nice copy will be (ahem) "bearin' more dough."
CGC census: 135 copies graded 5.0 Universal. Comparable CGC sales: Numerous sales in this grade from $1887 to $2277. Most recent: $2059 (Feb. 2020).
