Sixth plate daguerreotype. This is likely half of a stereoscopic daguerreotype.
The image a variant of a stereoscopic daguerreotype by T. R. Williams (Thomas Richard Williams) in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum. Its title is 'Vanities/ Still Life of Skull, Books and Hourglass/ The Sands of Time.' It is easy then to conclude that this daguerreotype being offered is also by T. R. Williams. T. R. Williams was a noted English photographer who pioneered stereoviews, and whose stereoviews are considered very collectible.
Instruments of science dominate including an open book, spectacles, and a skull. There's also a pencil compass and an hourglass, and other items of interest. Full case.
The consignors emphasized that this was bought from Julian Wolff a couple of decades ago.
