Item Details
Description
  • Item: Caudillaenus nicolasi gen. et sp. nov. (Rábano et al., 2014) enrolled perfect Fossil Trilobite. Very rare.
  • Origin: Rahiat new quarry (Rábano et al., 2014), Alnif area, Anti-Atlas Mountains, Morocco
  • Weight (g): 170
  • Size/Dimensions: Fossil: 12,8 (if outstretched) x 5,4 cm; Matrix: 6,7 x 4,3 cm.
  • Taxonomy - Species: Caudillaenus nicolasi gen. et sp. nov. (Rábano et al., 2014); Family: Illanidae; Order: Corynexochida; Class: Trilobita.

Restoration details: No restoration. 100% natural. A perfect museum specimen. To exigent collectors, from Rahiat new quarry (Rábano et al., 2014). Described a few years ago (Rábano et al., 2014 - DOI 10.3140//bull.geosci.1467), it proceeds from a quarry abundant in new Trilobites and Echinoderms. You can see our pictures from the quarry, very similar to those of Rábano et al.'s paper. The most outstanding characteristics of this species (and of this specimen in particular) are a gorgeous inflated display, with all thoracic segments very conspicuous, an attractive chocolate colour exoskeleton and fine holochroal eye facets preserved in both eyes, an uncommon occurrence for many Ordovician trilobites in general, and for Illaenids in particular. A perfect specimen, that honours the title of the paper that described the species: "A remarkable Illaenid trilobite from the Middle Ordovician of Morocco". You can hardly find a better one.

"It shows a spheroidal enrollment type previously unknown in illaenids, with the pygidium protruding beyond the cephalon, and the cephalic margin fitting into a shallow and wide coaptative furrow on the pygidial doublure" (Rábano et al., 2014).
