Covens & Mortier's publication of the key map to Popples' important map of the eastern half of North America, the Caribbean, etc., for their four-sheet version of the large Popple map. Popple's 20-sheet (in addition to the key) map of British North America is noted in Schwartz & Ehrenberg (Plate 90) as "the first large-scale printed map of North America," although they do add that "it abounds with geographic distortions, errors, and omissions, all of these emphasized by its size." This beautifully engraved reduction, has a delicate pictorial cartouche with natives, fauna, and encroaching Europeans; there are four small bird's eye views (of Niagara Falls, Mexico City, Quebec, and New York) at the top, and 18 small maps or plans of ports, harbors or islands at the right-hand side. The printed caption in the top margin reads "Carte Particuliére de l'Amérique Septentrionale" - this is trimmed close affecting the top of some of the letters.
