Description
Chinese, 20th century. A group of two carved wood Buddhist figures comprising one gilded and polychrome lacquered seated Buddha on a lotus throne, and one carved bamboo figure of Shou seated and holding a peach and ruyi sceptre. Each unmarked. Buddha approximate height 11.5". Shou approximate height 8".
Condition
Carved Shou figure with two minor hairline fractures to wood near edge of bottom (only visible from bottom and stable), some scattered remnants of red and black lacquered patina (likely stripped at an earlier date), all elements intact, under black light examination, no further signs of damage, loss or repair. Parcel gilt and lacquered Buddha with visible losses and damage to hands and parts of draped sleeves (visible in photos--most significant on resting hand), losses to chin (on bottom and sides), minor wood losses throughout, wear to gilt and lacquer throughout commensurate with age and handling, lifting to lacquer and gilt throughout particularly on base behind and on sides of seated figure, sculpture structurally sound however with losses throughout and wear throughout.
