- Condition report: Very good to excellent; 80% original surface paint. 20% over-paint most notably to upper sky region. Mild to moderate paint shrinkage. Dirt & Grime.
PROVENANCE:
Acquired directly from the Artist in the 1920s by the previous owner's family and thence by descent.
Additional Notes: Housed in its original hand carved cream & gilt colored wooden frame.
FWIW: For a similar example (condition only) Freeman?s: 3/30/2014 lot: 40, SOLD: 32,500 over a presale estimate of 10,000-15,000 USD (Note paint shrinkage).
ARTIST BIO:
King grew up around the arts, assisting his father as a goldsmith. His subjects varied widely, from portraits and illustrations to landscapes and scenes of rural life. He kept a studio on 18th street in Philadelphia and exhibited widely. Some of the best public collections in the nation possess King's work including the National Gallery of Art and the Albright Knox Gallery in the artist's hometown of Buffalo, New York.
