Description
A stage-worn outfit by Tina Turner, a custom Gianni Versace mini dress with an internal bodysuit, during her 1996-1997 Wildest Dreams Tour.
The Atelier Versace ultra-mini crystal mesh dress features black Alencon lace trim with jet-black beading and rhinestone straps and house-painted Medusa logos in black enamel, framed with rhinestones. The dress has a built-in boned bodice with an internal industrial side zip, there is a hidden zip closure for the exterior mesh fabric. The dress is also lined with a spandex body suit to accommodate the short length. There is an Atelier Versace label and no size tag present, there is a "NY" embroidered at the linning.
Donatella Versace recalls this specific design when she was quoted by Vogue Magazine online (April 1, 2021), saying, “My brother Gianni and I dressed Tina when she performed in Milan in May 1997. We created a lingerie-style minidress made from crystal mesh, very short. When she saw it, she said, ‘Shorter.’ As she put the dress on and looked at herself in the mirror, there was a sudden change in her attitude. The lioness came out. Tina really understands and is able to harness the power of clothes. Backstage, before the performance, she danced with Gianni. It was magical, I will never forget that moment. On stage, her energy was incredible!”
Versace showed a collection with crystal mesh lingerie-inspired mini skirts and dresses during his 1996 Atelier Spring and Ready-to-Wear Fall collections.
Wayne Scot Lukas who was Tina Turner's stylist worked with Gianni and Donatella Versace on this custom design for Tina's 1996-97 world tour.
Only two of these dresses were made for the tour. One was donated by Turner to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, when she was inducted in 2021. The other she gave to her long time personal assistant, who worked for Turner from 1994 to 2003.
