Although he travelled extensively in West and Central Africa as part of his work, collecting works in situ, the majority of his collection came from the "cabinets of curiosity" that abounded in European capitals during the 1920s. It also comes from prestigious galleries (Paris, Brussels, London, New York, etc.). Dan masks, in a variety of styles, are generally performed during highly theatrical entertainment festivities in which women play a predominant role. The "mocking" mask called Déanglé defines an ideal of beauty and benevolence, as it is sculpted in honor of young village girls or renowned men. Each mask bore a name linked to its function. Also used for circumcision rites, they appear in the company of gle sö singing masks and large go ge masks relating to the go society, which exercises justice and maintains social stability.Additional Information: Stand not included.
