A Highly Decorative Musketeer's Powder-Flask In Italian Late 16th Century Style 19th Century With wooden body covered in burgundy velvet (plush worn) mounted in gilt iron, the front pierced and chiselled with figures amid symmetrical scrolling foliage, a standing figure at the base flanked by winged demi-figures, female sphinxes and surmounted by a pair of birds, a winged cherub's head on a plinth and two further figures seated on a plinth either side of a foliate vase above, all within borders of bound foliage, the remaining mounts en suite including top mount with chased parcel-gilt nozzle and cut-off spring, the former with gilt sprung tap formed as a horned merman, the latter with terminal formed in the round as Pegasus, four roped suspension rings each on a flower-head shaped washer, and pierced iron belt hook (some old rust patination, the back re-gilt) Footnotes: Provenance The Miguel Mujica Gallo Collection Sotheby's London, The Visser Collection, Fine, Rare and Important Arms, Part I, 3 July 1990, lot 150 This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * * VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.
