Description
Thisis a lovely bird's-eye plan of the town of Hesdin in northern France by Calais. The city is dominated by a large town square and the church of Notre Dame. Manned cannon are seen on each of the five 'arrow-head' shaped batteries. A pair of blank coats of arms, figures in the foreground and a mannerist title cartouche complement the town plan. Hesdin was once a fief of the Counts of Artois, who were vassals of the Counts of Flanders. It depicts fortifications, a moat around the town, numerous buildings, churches, and a castle surrounded by a smaller moat. The Canche River courses through town. French text on verso. From the Civitatis Orbis Terrarum.
