Description
Southeast Asia, Philippines, Northern Luzon, Ifugao, ca. 19th century CE. A hand carved wooden sculpture of a rooster with its legs curled under its body. The surface is heavily encrusted with mineral buildup, not only from exposure to the elements, but also perhaps from years of sacrificial offerings, such as animal blood or fat smeared into the surface during ceremonies. Nearly all Ifugao events are marked with feasting and bloodletting - chickens and other livestock are ritualistically killed and eaten during festivals of celebration and to ensure good harvests. Size: 9.5" L x 3" W x 6" H (24.1 cm x 7.6 cm x 15.2 cm); 7.5" H (19 cm) on included custom stand.
