Description
Portrait of Fala, President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Dog
oil on canvas
24 x 20 in., stretcher
signed lower left
Provenance: Descended through the family of an important Croton-on-Hudson couple.
According to the consignor it was inherited from her aunt, Rozella Becker. Rozella along with her husband Isaac Becker, a successful dentist, owned Pine Tree Farm in Hyde Park, New York during WWII. Mrs. Becker was a known collector and occasional reseller of antiques who associated with Israel Sack (see lot photos for a copy of one of her advertisements from an issue of ANTIQUES April, 11 1950). The Beckers were known to have associated with the Roosevelts as neighbors. It is unclear how Rozella came to own the painting, but it hung in their Hyde Park home for many years until it was inherited by the present owner.
Notes: While Mitchell typically signed in all-capitals, see "Cabrillo Bridge at Balboa Park" sold at auction October 22, 2013 and signed fred mitchell for a similar signature.
