Description
Hardtack. N.p.: National Biscuit Company (Nabisco), ca 1913. Stamped "NBC". With Original envelope addressed to Mrs. E.R. Hickok of Canton, Pennsylvania. With the pencil inscription: "What the G.A.R. had to eat in Civil War. Grdfather Hickok."
A nice intact example of hardtack that was issued to Civil War veterans who were planning to attend the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg held on 1-3 July 1913 as part of a promotional effort by the National Biscuit Company (NBC).
This example is enhanced with contemporary provenance from the descendants of a veteran. Several men with the last name Hickok from Bradford County served in various Pennsylvania regiments during the war.
