Description
Carved bone pincushion.
A finely carved relic made by a prisoner at the infamous Libby Prison. Made with great skill, the artist carved a patriotic "Union" shield, a representation of the prison with the legend "Libby", and a set of dates, "June 23 / 1863 / March 1 / 1865”, likely corresponding to the artist's confinement. The lower register features the word "PRISON" rendered in finely carved cut-work letters, themselves suggesting the bars of a prison.
An unusually impressive prisoner's relic.
