Kathryn Evelyn Bard Cherry (1880-1931) studied painting at a variety of institutes: the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, the New York School of Fine Arts, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She won many awards as she exhibited across the country, ultimately landing a job as head of the Art Department at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. Kathryn most enjoyed operating with a full-spectrum palette featuring bright and cheerful colors in her impressionistic paintings. This fine example of her work that features a colourful yet tranquil scene set in the small idyllic port city of Gloucester in northern Massachusetts--a town known for its scenic beauty that has attracted many artists, writers and film makers. In the foreground we see a couple of fishermen on their boats and the wharf itself followed by larger buildings related to the fishing and shipping industry set next to renditions of colourful and historic homes that line the bay.
