Item Details
Description
Small and luminous oil and egg tempera painting entitled "An Egg", by Henrietta Hoopes. The Wilmington, Delaware born artist studied at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC and the Sorbonne in Paris. According to her (delightful) 1996 obituary by Larry Maddry in the Virginia Pilot, she never quite forgave Dorothy Parker for saying, when the met the much younger Henrietta Hoopes at the Algonquin in New York City, "How sweet." According to the same source, the artist stowed away on an Ocean Liner bound for Europe on a last minute whim, and impressed Ernest Hemmingway with her sketches of Spanish bull fights that he wrote the introduction to her show at the Knoedler Gallery, NYC. Hoopes' exhibitions include: the Paris Salon, 1934 (prize); Hollywood Riviera Club, 1936 (prize); California Watercolor Society, 1937; Stendahl Gallery (Los Angeles), 1937; California Palace of Legion of Honor, 1937; Delaware Art Center, 1939-40; Art Institute of Chicago, 1941; Phillips Gallery (Washington DC), 1942; and the Washington Artists Guild, 1950. The painting is mounted in a small egg-shaped frame. Frame approx. 7" x 9". Sight approx. 3" x 4 5/8"
