Description
Mary Seymour, possibly Ohio, 1815, silk on linen. Central flowers and birds, with alphabet and number lines above and a verse below, and with "Mary Seymour aged 8 years 1815." In a later frame, 18.5" high, 14" wide (overall). Possibly Mary Seymour (1807-1879) was born in Virginia to Solomon (1779-1846) and Elizabeth Ann Salts (1786-1830). The family moved to Ohio in 1809 or 1810, settling in Jackson County. Mary (known as Polly) married Eli Hinton (1807-1871) in Ross County in 1828 and the couple had eight children. By 1850, the family had moved to Hocking County, where Polly died in 1879.Geneaological research has found a Mary Seymour of the right age, having been born in Ohio in 1807 and dying in Hocking County in 1879.
