Description
An English mixed media, aerosol and stencil, artwork on cardboard, Anarchist Rat, Weston Super Mare, 2015, from Dismaland, after Banksy, English, born 1974. Inscribed, Banksy is Dismal, Enjoy Your Free Art, and stamped with Dismaland stamps, on the backside. Dismaland is a temporary art project taking the form of an amusement park. Created by the English artist Banksy, it is located in the seaside resort of Weston super Mare, England, on the site of a former leisure area. Framed. Banksy is a pseudonymous England based street artist, political activist, and film director whose real name and identity remain unconfirmed and the subject of speculation. Active since the 1990s, his satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique. His works of political and social commentary have appeared on streets, walls and bridges throughout the world. Banksys work grew out of the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. Banksy says that he was inspired by 3D, a graffiti artist and founding member of the musical group Massive Attack. Banksy created a number of different signs for the 2003 London protest against the Iraq War but few originals have survived because they were either discarded in the street or confiscated by the Metropolitan Police.
