Description
Renato Guttuso (1911-1987) Italian, Oil On Paper on Canvas. Oil and mixed media on paper laid down on canvas. Titled "Sicilian Peasant" on the back. Label on the back from ACA Gallery, New York. Signed and dated in the lower right corner - Guttuso and possibly a city where it was painted and the date '56. Striking work will conjure up the spirit Don Quixote to some - this colorful piece depicts a man with a cap on horseback. Renato Guttuso worked & lived in Italy and best remembered for Abstract figure, landscape and design painting. One of the more influential, well known Italian painters of the 20th century, Guttuso was a lifelong communist who loved the Dolce Vita — his long-term mistress Marta Marzotto was a countess — and his oeuvre is as brimful of contradictions as his life. Pablo Neruda was a witness at his wedding. Pasolini wrote a poem about one of his paintings. When he lined up his paintbrush with his politics, his vision sang with lyrical conviction. Size: 24 x 29 in. Guttuso lived a full and interesting life and created attractive works that spoke to his passion for living.. Provenance: ACA Galleries NYC. By descent to present owner, a Southern Gentleman. #6001 #3
