Description
DUTCH LOUISIANA BY THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER MAP, hand-colored engraving on laid paper, titled "LOVISIANA / by de Rivier / MISSISIPPI" in a Rococo-style cartouche in the upper right corner, from Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid... that was published in Amsterdam in 1720, which details "The Mississippi Bubble" in regards to the failed financial attempt by John Law (Scottish, 1671-1729) to open up Louisiana for settlement and investment on behalf of the French Government, depicting the Mississippi River Valley and Great Lakes regions with French possessions and Native American settlements, the upper left show a vignette of two Native American figures holding a cornucopia with pouring water having "Het Wapen van de Compagnie" written along lower edge of the shield cartouche. Housed under UV glass in a modern gilt frame, backing paper with gallery label for Antique Prints, Inc. of Ocean View, DE. Circa 1720. 6 1/4" x 7 1/2" sight, 12 1/4" x 13 3/8" OA.
Condition
Good to very good visual condition with overall toning, some light spotting, light fading to watercolor, a tear in the lower left corner going approximately 1" into the image, frame with minor wear. Not examined out of frame.Â
