Mikhail Vasilievich Nesterov, Russian, Soviet, 1862 to 1942, a listed oil on canvas painting, Half-figure (the study). Signed by the artist on the lower right. Framed. Features original paper labels on the backside. The painting is listed in the catalog: A. Mikhailov, Mikhail Nesterov: Life and Creativity, Sovetsky Khudozhnik Publishing House, 1958. Etude (half-figure), oil on canvas, Collection of V. V. Pavlov. Note: Mikhail Nesterov studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he attended the classes of V.G. Perov, A. K. Savrasov and I. M. Pryanishnikov. In St. Petersburg he studied at the Academy of Arts, where he was a student of P. P. Chistyakov. In 1896 he joined the Peredvizhniki. Later, his works were deeply concerned with the exploration of the religious idea of the Russian Soul. Nesterovs oeuvre includes landscapes and portraits, monumental wall paintings, as well as historical-religious compositions.
