Description
An historical colored map of Wisconsin published by S. Augustus Mitchell of Philadelphia dates from the first year of Wisconsin's statehood, 1849. It shows Native American tribal area and includes Chippewa, Winnebago (Ho Chunk Nation), Menomonee, and an area listed as New York Tribe? referring to the Oneida. Of interest is the area marked Carver's Claim, which refers to Jonathan Carver. In 1766 the British hired Jonathan Carver to map the Wisconsin and Minnesota Rivers in advance of an expedition to find a North-West Passage. He was part of an expedition in 1767 to find the passage. After Carver's death, his heirs filed a claim that they were in possession of a deed signed by 2 Sioux chieftains granting Carver an area just below the Chippewa area and along the Mississippi River. After an investigation where the Sioux nation were consulted, the Sioux elders claimed that there were no such chieftains. It was determined that his heirs were engaged in nefarious and fraudulent activity (?) and the deed disappeared. The map itself measures 16.5" tall X 14" across.
