English School, 1614 English School, 1614 Portrait of a lady, said to be Lady Frances James (1563-1648), daughter of Martin James of Smarden, Kent, married to Sir Thomas Roberts of Glassenbury Place, Cranbrook, Kent, aged 51, together with a young child, half-length, she in a black dress, jewelled headdress, white ruff and pearls, holding gloves, the child in an embroidered dress and elaborate lace headdress inscribed 'ANo 1614' u.l., and 'AET. SVÆ 51' u.r., indistinctly inscribed on the frame verso, and transcribed on a later label, oil on panel 90.5 x 70.5cm
