A large abstract oil on canvas painting by Susan Schweig Langsdorf, titled "Aerial View", size: 24 x 36 in. , 26 x 38 in. framed, signed "Martyl" lower right, conditon excellent, small sag in upper right corner needs to be keyed out.
Suzanne Schweig Langsdorf was born in St. Louis, MO in 1918 and was active and lived in IL, MO, and KS. She was known as "Martyl", by which name she signed her paintings. She was a plein-air painter of western landscapes in styles of both realism and abstraction. She attended Washington University in St. Louis where she graduated in 1938. Between 1934-1940, she spent the summers studying at the Ste. Genevieve School of art. In 1940 and 41 she spent the summers at the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center studying with Arnold Blanch and Boardman Robinson. From 1965 to 1970, she was an instructor at the University of Chicago. Martyl has had five one-man shows in Saint Louis since 1936, and has been represented in numerous National exhibitions. In 1940 she was awarded the first prize in the Midwestern Show at the Kansas City Art Institute and the following year she was awarded first prize in the annual exhibition of Missouri artists at the Saint Louis City Art Museum. She has won numerous other awards in the graphic arts.
