Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), Shan period, ca. 19th century. A special Buddha statue beautifully carved from wood seated in a classic meditative pose with legs crossed and hands displaying the “earth witness” mudra atop an integral throne or pedestal. The Buddha possesses a tranquil expression with downcast eyes and presents wonderful characteristic details such as a flaming ushnisha - symbolizing the power of his enlightenment - and elongated ears that touch his shoulders signifying his renunciation of materialistic wealth. The surface retains much of the original deep brown lacquer with a red pedestal. Shimmering golden flecks on the shoulder and head indicate this statue had a layer of gilding at one time. Size: 4.75" L x 3.5" W x 14" H (12.1 cm x 8.9 cm x 35.6 cm); 14.75" H (37.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-J.B. collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA
