Description
**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. An impressive cast iron adze or axe head, with a curved blade that flares outward. A circular socket is set at one end with four pointed tabs. A thick squared butt end slightly protrudes from the socket. This axe head was certainly meant to be hafted on to a pole or handle. Such a hefty piece could have been used for a variety of utilitarian purposes, such as digging or chopping. A thick russet patina covers the surface. Size: 7.65" L x 3" W (19.4 cm x 7.6 cm); 8.125" H (20.6 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
